The social media phenomenon that is Facebook seems to be spreading their net even further in the latest revelation from mobile giants O2. The mobile phone network will now provide the option to its customers to top-up their Pay As You Go accounts through a secure app.
This will be the first of its kind in the mobile world and will see O2 customers able to top-up their mobile accounts via the company’s Facebook page. Alex Pearmain, Head of Social at O2, describes how the social commerce strategy is the first for any mobile operator, “Most stores let you browse their catalogue while in Facebook and then take you to their site to complete a transaction…we wanted Facebook to remain a destination for O2 customers rather than just another referral channel”.
As it stands, users can’t yet top up their O2 accounts using Facebook credits but this could change depending on the success of the campaign and whether or not social commerce becomes more mainstream.
Already this year, fashion brands ASOS, French Connection and Lyle & Scott have all launched Facebook stores. Likewise, FMCG brands including Heinz and Unilever’s Dove are experimenting with selling items directly through the social network.
Online Marketing job-seekers will be interested to hear of the new social commerce craze that seems to be taking technology to new levels. Alex Carter of Brand Recruitment highlights the fact that marketing jobs nowadays often encompass an element of social media and it is important for any person in marketing to be kept up-to-speed with the latest online campaigns.
